Cleaning oven to march out standard - tips please?

I have an electric oven and hob (has the solid plates rather than rings). I've always paid march out cleaners but we're moving ourselves this time so can't afford it.

Best methods for cleaning the oven and in particular the hob would be gratefully received.

TIA :)

Oven Pride for the oven, don't really know about the hob, you used to be able to buy a cloth of some sort to do these. Oven Pride is amazing stuff, it comes in a box and has a big plastic bag for oven racks, grill pan etc. You put half the bottle in the oven, other half in the bag and leave (I normally do at night and clean it in the morning) the grime just wipes off - brilliant and so easy :)

Yeah have bought some of that ready to use. I remember once using ammonia in a bin bag. Wow, that made my eyes water, even doing it in the garden, lol.

will second oven pride fab stuff does need to be left quite a bit to work if its really bad though,as for the hob if its an all glass top oven pride or if its black raised tops i tried for the life of me to clean them and my friend recommended painting the circle bits with this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Matt-Black-exhaust-ovens-HEAT-RESISTANT-Fire-PAINT-Everbuild-purimachos-/160717135249?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Other_Fireplaces&hash=item256b7cdd91#ht_2386wt_1037 fab stuff just make sure you run the hobs to seal the paint after putting it on as its gives off a right wiff lol ;-)

You can also get a hob cleaner available from Electrolux or Bosch (buy for your make of hob) which is rather like shoe polish. You apply it and then buff it up. the results are excellent. I bought mine online from Electrolux.
Also I discovered that the door of my oven could be removed so I could clean all layers of the glass. I found a web-site that showed me how to do it but basically there is a lever at the side of the pull down door that you switch and it releases the door.
I t really helps when cleaning the oven interior too!
Horrid job but lay plenty of newspaper on the floor before you start and it should be fine. Good Luck!

Can you pay one of those companies that take the oven away for a day to deep clean it - I guess they'd have to smuggle it away though as I doubt the DHE would be happy!

Ask on the Old Style board - they will give you a recipe (probably involving vinegar / lemon juice / bicarb or whatever) for a cleaning mixture that should work.

Edited to add: if someone suggests using bio washing powder and soaking everything in the bath, don't do it - I had a two tone bath in one of the quarters because the previous occupant had tried that (it ate into the enamel coating). As usual, previous bod was fined but bath not replaced - even though it was really rough on the old bum!
