Computer won't start

Options
I'm writing this from my laptop. My desktop will only start in safe mode. Whenever I try to start my comp, it gets so far loading, then it goes to a blue screen with white writing. It is not on long enoguh for me to read it. Then restarts with the option on loading in safe mode.
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

Could be caused by software or hardware faults.

Reboot it, immediately press F8 to bring up the safe mode menu. At the bottom of the list should be an option to disable automatic restart on system failure. Click this.

Now restart the desktop again as normal. When the blue screen appears it will remain on the screen until you manually restart the computer, giving you the change to record the details.

Post the full error message, including the STOP error code (the long line of numbers)

Which version of windows is it running?

Thank Figment! My desktop is working right now. I am in a middle of virus scan so will reboot when that is finished. It has been like it for hours and now it's finally working/ Must've known I was posting about it - lol!
    I am using windows 7.

If you've recently added any new software, or installed any hardware (including USB memory sticks etc), this would be the likely cause.

Otherwise it could be a memory fault or a number of other things. The STOP error code should help to identify what is causing it. The event log may also give some clues.

Whilst it is running, there's another way to switch off automatic restart.

Press the Windows + Pause/Break keys together. Then click on Advanced System Settings > Startup and recovery Settings > System Failure. Untick Automatic restart and (if necessary) change the dropdown under Write debugging information to Kernel memory dump

You can also use a utility called Who Crashed which will read/display the contents of the crash reports.

My moto is never say never with PCs, however if it works in safe mode but not in a standard boot, then my guess it is a software problem,

Sooo, if not alreasy mentioned try doing a restore back to when it was last working properly. Other things to do are an system file check (sfc /scannow) - only works properly if you have the sytem disk with the version of the OS you have (eg XP with SP3 s;ipstreamed/included, etc); uninstall any software added recently, etc etc.

One other thing, having said it is likely to be software, is maybe a RAM test, as in sofemode you will be using less resource, so maybe, just maybe, running Memtest will eliminate any RAM issues.

    good luck..........

Desktop is still going to blue screen and does sometimes stay on. However, once on, it is having trouble (taking forever after clicking) opening applications, programs, files etc. I got aol open and managed to get as far as moneysavingexpert.com front page. Nothing would load after that. From then on, aol wouldn't open. Later, I did manage to get open IE and Firefox and neither will connect to the internet. I keep getting connection error message. This is the same in safe mode.
I did manage to do a hijack this scan and wanted post the log in my other thread for a kind person to take a look at.
Figment - I tried doing what you said when it went to blue screen but nothing happened :(
Apart from getting the blue screen, when I was on, at least programs etc. were working. Why since this afternoon has this happened?

If I was rich, I'd buy new computer because I feel like throwing my desktop through the window!!!

Then I'd buy a new window.

Be more specific please. What did you do and what do you mean by nothing happened?

If the blue screen is still only appearing for a few seconds you didn't clear the tick against automatically restart. This is how it should look. Click OK to save.

After a Blue screen there is an event log located in
    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Administrative Tools\event viewer
you need the Stop error code (give a clue on if it's hardware of software)

    Things to do:
    check harddrive for errors.
run start type cmd then type Chkdsk c: /f (this will clear/show any errors in harddrive)
next download memtest make bootable USB / CD then run test many many hours later you know if your Ram is faulty.
Could be a driver issue reload motherboard drivers then update.

    Start with the event log.
  • yes a memory stick fault is def high on the list for this one.

Thank Figment. I will have another go. Nothing happened when I tried it. I was like I never pressed any buttons or keys.
I don't understand - nothing worked yesterday but today programs are opening, even if they are opening slower than snail pace.
