Passport Question

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but couldn't find anything with a quick search!
My husband has not travelled abroad for approximately 20 years and when he did travel it was with the old "One year" passport - he destroyed and disposed of this many years ago. Previous to this he travelled abroad with the Armed Services and as a child on his parents passport.
He now needs to apply for a new passport but can't figure out what he should apply for - technically it's a renewal but he no longer has his old passport to send with his application and it hasn't been lost or stolen - he destroyed it after it expired. His overseas travel in the army was on MOD papers.
I can't believe the application form doesn't have "old passport destroyed" as an option...or are we missing something?
Would it be better/easier if he just applied as if it was his first adult passport? We don't want to delay too long as we are hoping to travel in approximately 8 weeks.
TIA for any advice

If it was me, I'd be applying for a first time adult passport.
You have no details whatsoever of the one year passport 20 years ago so introducing it to the application would potentially delay things.0 -
Yes, me too, I would apply for a completely new passport.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
It isn't a renewal, those old passports were not classed as "Full" passports, they were a temporary visitors passport and the full checks that the passport agency carry out weren't done as it was issued at the Post Office.
He needs to apply for a first time adult passport, for which he may be required to attend an interview for. Not everyone does they are picked out at random by the passport agency.0 -
Thank you so much for the replies - we will do as advised, it does makes sense.
Thanks again

He WILL have to attend an interview - they are not picked at random. If you are applying for your first ever passport (the 1 year British Visitors passports do not apply) as an adult you must attend an Identity Interview before the passport is issued.0
