Removing walls in a leasehold maisonette

We are mid-way through a purchase of an ex council maisonette in need of total refurbishment.

The building survey hasn't yet been written up but an informal conversation with the surveyor yesterday confirmed that all internal walls are non load-bearing slab walls.

We are hoping to remove some of them to make it more open plan downstairs - anyone know if this is a job we could do ourselves or is it best left to pros?
Am also thinking we'd probably have to let the freeholder or building control know or something? Sorry - newbie to this!

You will require a Building Control application as removing walls may affect means of escape in event of a fire.

You will also require your freeholder's permission.
