After doing some research about my problem (see https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4017013)
I have decided that Yahoo is not keeping up with their security. A lot of people are saying they've been with yahoo for 10+ years and not a single problem (myself included) until the past year or so, many people's accounts are being hacked.
A lot of people are moving to gmail. I was wondering if this is the best one to go with?

I've used Hotmail, yahoo mail and Gmail.
I like Gmail the best out of the three but as above poster said it also registers you to Google+, Youtube as they're all tied in.0 -
I use hotmail and Hushmail, the only decent secure free web email. It can incorporate with Private Idaho as well.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. If any Parking Pirates have a problem with my post then contact me for my solicitors address.*****0

I'm not too happy with Google's privacy practices, I guess if you don't want to use the service provided by yr ISP (or set up yr own domain - assuming you want yr email addresses to be transportable), then I would use hotmail (you can use it in conjunction with Windows Live Mail).
Incidentally on the Yahoo hacking, a friend of mine had his Yahoo account hacked on 9/6/12, both my wife and I received the fraudulent emails - changing his password resolved the issue. Sounds as though Yahoo accounts have been subject to a larger scale attack. I regularly (about every two months) get email from someone's hacked hotmail account. I'm assuming that there's some mass password pounder program out there that works on the hotmail / live website.
Google and yahoo emails don't seem to have that problem.
Maybe it's simply because hotmail has a bigger percentage of email accounts.0 -
Thanks for the recommendations. I have read that gmail is the best for security. But I do wonder that if it is linked to youtube etc. isn't that making you more open to a possible hack. I really don't care about any extras. I just want security.0

I just want security.
Google uses HTTPS for nearly everything now and there's also their optional 2-step verification system should you feel you need it.0 -
I use fastmail https://www.fastmail.fm/
You can have free accounts, but I decided to pay for a member's account, which has better spam protection.0
