Claiming on home buildings insurance...

Just wondering is this is normal - I suspect it probably is....
OH and I discovered our roof was leaking and my Mum suggested I see if it was covered by our buildings insurance. Assessor came and said that the leak was normal wear and tear and so not covered. He said we could claim via the accidental damage part of our policy, but there wasn't much difference between the overall cost and the excess.
We decided not to go via the insurance and as it turns out, the work has cost more than anticipated.
We have just had out renewal quote and the claim has been listed. When I queried this they said that I had made a claim which wasn't accepted.
Technically, this is true, but I think this is ridiculous and it means that everytime I ask for an assessment, I will be penalised (by loosing my no claims discount).
I know this is probably obvious, but we have only been in our house for 4 years and have never had to claim, so its all fairly new to me.
Any thoughts or suggestions going forward?

You did make a claim, and your insurer paid for an assessor. So they have rightly reduced your NCD, and every time you request an "assessment" off your insurer expect it to be marked as a "claim".
So don't get them to do you assessments on whether or not you have a claim if you have home maintenance issues on future!0
