I've had an automated call saying this message is for mrs my name it is important that you contact the halifax fraud prevention dept please press any key to continue.. I don't normally press any keys with his kind of call but I did mainly because I used the new halifax secure on the tesco grocery site late last night and wondered if it might have anything to do with that, although I shop there every week. After I pressed a key all it said then was, please telephone 0845 356 0024, why couldnt they just say that number without me having to press a key?

Is it legit and should I call the number? google says suspect nuisance call. I've checked my online bank and nothing is suspect so far but things don't always go on straight away
Thanx

I just got an early call from Santander fraud prevention at 8am and could not catch the number either. Here it is: 0845 401 9114. I had to get it off Santander customer services on the back of my bank card: 0845 607 0666.

They also gave me this number, 0845 356 0024 which I did not have to use.

The first number above took me straight into the automated system where questions were asked to establish my identity.

What was all the fuss about? I had written a cheque to my local garage for a repair bill. I had done the same in December - twice.

Whilst I am glad that they are minding my interests, they are also idiots.

Number gabbled at me before I can jot it down and about an entirely unsuspicious transaction.

    Bah!

As you've said, the google results (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=0845+356+0024) seem to suggest it's not genuine. I'd suggest calling halifax on the number on the back of your card to check everything is fine.

Even if it wais genuine (which I doubt), then halifax are incompetent - since they shouldn't be asking people to call on an unverifiable number, and so you still shouldn't call it.

    Thanks

I called it and it was because they blocked a tesco grocery transaction last night because I cancelled it at first because I wasnt sure about the new halifax visa secure thing.

I really dont know why they favour asking for you to input your dob on the online halifax visa secure rather than a password because a lot of people will know your dob and are less likely to know a password, I told the lady at the fraud dept this when she said paswords can easily be compromised

I agree the number should be known to the public clearly
    Thanx

  • I have been having these calls on and off for two months, automated and with all the junk calls I get didn't know if it was genuine. I mentioned it in my branch and they didn't think the two 0845 numbers looked like any of theirs so I ignored them. I then received a call off a 'propper person' saying it was urgent, so still not trusting he was genuine I called my branch and they all were genuine! I had to contact fraud prevention and they are sorting it out for me. Someone has somehow got my details and have used my account a few times, bank became suspicious when it was attempted to be used abroad. Best to query it in branch ASAP as you don't know who to trust over the phone.

    Better never in this case.
  • Well actually I saw the date but as I found it by doing a google search I thought someone else might find an updated post usefull if searched for in future as these calls are still going on.
If you only have negative comments maybe you shouldn't bother posting as these forums are for advice to others who are actually interested in using them properly!!!

Not at all, it's an open forum that can take a range of views.

Any such calls should be treated with caution. Independently get a number for the relevant banks fraud department and then phone them on another phone to ensure that you are actually dialling the correct place.

Your advice to check in branch probably isn't great, as responding to these calls promptly and correctly minimises risk and damage both to you and the bank.
