Good Reasons to be picked?

Hey everyone,

I'm in my second year at University and am currently in the process of applying to do my third year dissertation project...

The project i'm applying for is highly oversubscribed however, i'm very passionate about it and am trying to think of reasons why I out of all applicants should should be picked.. I feel like everyone is going to say how motivated they are etc so what can I say to make me stand out?

Any suggestions appreciated..

Stu:)

  • I'm in the same position myself. I got one step ahead of the game by booking an appointment with the lecturer who is supervising the project area and by doing a literary review of several papers in the area which I wanted to do my dissertation in. (Big brownie points).
The lecturer was mega impressed and really keen to work with me and said I was very likely to get my 1st choice dissertaion subject.
Some may see it as brown nosing...but I don't give a monkey's I see it as getting what I want!
    Good Luck.

That sounds fine to me!! If you want to do something then that bit of extra effort can definitely go some way to helping you get there! I'm going to email a couple of supervisors just so they know who I am! You never know, it just might make the difference...

A little brown nosing never hurt anyone, and can be a useful technique when used to gain an advantagous position in situations such as the one described.

You guys are lucky...that your lecturers play some role in selecting who to do the projects. Ours were allocated using some kind of computer software. For both my practical and literary project (i'm doing a science degree), I didn't get the projects I wanted and ended up having the worst year of my life - stuck with the projects I hate. And now, I'm still struggling to finish them up! =( Even worse, this is affecting my revision and my final exam is just less than a month away.

Anyway, rant over and good luck to you guys.

you have to apply? ive never heard of that. im doing creative writing and ssr and i went to see my poetry tutor, told him i wanted to do a creative diss instead of a practical one, that i wanted himt o be my supervising tutor and that i wanted to focus on performance poetry. he asked me how many poems i wanted to write and we agreed on 10 and a 2000 word commentary. then again, my diss is only one 20 credit module i have to do this year out of 6.

We had to just rank our courses for the final year from 1 to 6.. they then sorted us all out.. most people got their first choice course - once we've chosen which course to link it to we just had to talk to the tutor to choose our topic.
