Summer holiday ideas

We are trying to plan a local trip with our 4 year old daughter. We want to make this a nice trip for her as she would be stepping into her reception starting this september. Chances are that our friends who have two sons might also potentially join, as the three make a good team!
And also I guess it helps to have a bigger volume to get competitive rates for trips like this? I would really appreciate any ideas/suggestions for this holiday. We are looking at 4 adults and 3 toddlers (4-6 years old) for a week's holiday.
Any nice beach side or/ areas of interest for kids would be lovely. Hiring a car I understand would be much more cost efficient and also helps if it is a long drive as we will have two drivers. Although, we want to make sure kids have a good time we also don't want to rob the bank!
Thanks

Hiya. Where you starting out from?
First thing popping to mind is renting a cottage or a lodge.0 -
When you mention hiring a car, do you mean a people carrier to accommodate all of you rather than each family take their own car? If so, be warned that it can be very expensive. We paid £400 for a week's hire of a 7 seater 2 years ago and it was hard to track one down during the main holiday period. It also means you'll have to go everywhere together, whereas the odd few hours apart may be better for your friendship!0

Agree with Alikay - made a similar mistake on a trip to France- even your best friends can test you sometimes, unless you are a saint!0

We will start from west sussex (Crawley).
Totally agree with Alikay & Abscave about driving in a single car, but I thought the travelling together will be enjoyable should we decide to go somewhere long. And I definitely no saint!0
