Yes, so I think we can't have a competitor owning and servicing the network..
It is sort of like BT has allow people to use their car, but they are servicing the car etc...the costs aren't really transparent...we need a separate independent company servicing the car and all competitors paying for its use...
just a thought...not sure if it works or not..
The other factor you have to take into account is that if there was multiple companys owning and maintaining the network, it would lead to varying standards of maintainance and service received.
For example, going back to the railtrack example. A few years ago when the rail system was a listed company with shareholders in mind, it lead to a number of standards slipping which ultimately lead to some unfortunate train crashes. Obviously, nothing that drastic would hapen with the phone network, unless it affected the 999 service, but you can see why it is better to have one company in charge of the network. If saved £2710 and only spent the interest (Based on a return of 5%), you would have enough money to pay your TV Licence every year. Saving you £7452.50 over a period of 55 years, based on you buying a license from the age of 20 until your 75 at a cost of £135.50.0 -
Question........Say you use your own phone, there's a fault on the line and BT engineer finds out that the fault is due to your phone not working properly. Don't you have to pay for the engineer, or something like ,that coz the phone is not BT's?
I suppose you could plug in a different phone and see if the problem is still there before getting the engineer.
What do you do if you have problem ?0 -

What do you do if you have problem ?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I remember my parents a few years ago were renting a phone - I convinced them to buy one from argos - much cheaper. They spent around £20 on a BT phone, but have never had to replace it since!Indecision is the key to flexibility0
