Don't feel bad. I'm sure it wasn't the cold that killed him. As others have said, cats are full of bacteria and if he'd broken the skin there was probably nothing you could have done. But at least you looked after him and he sounded happy chirping and eating. x

I agree, don't feel guilty - you did your very best and you can't do more than that! :T
  • Ohhhh sorry to hear that Beckyy

I'm in Scotland too and if it happens again (which unfortunately it might with cats & birds ....) please call the SSPCA ASAP

I've rescued a few baby birds over the past couple of years - both caught by my cats & also once that've fallen out the nest - yes I know it's best to leave them & the parents will hopefully feed them, but if they're sitting in the middle of a road there's really no option.

Anyway, the SSPCA have already been really helpful and one of the animal collections officers have come and got them and taken them to their rehabilitation centre - best chance for them.

Sorry to hear this did not have a happy outcome, Beckyy. But well done for all your efforts.

If you can't get to a bird rescue place, you can take them to a vet and they have a duty of care if you turn up with an injured bird. You have to sign a form (after which I assume they can claim some compensation?) but they then take care of the bird.

At least, that is what happened when I took a bird in to my local vets.

They also say that to get the bird professional treatment within 24hrs gives it the best chance of survival.

Just a heads-up and tip for anyone put in the same situation as Beckyy!

It is amazing the effort you put in with the bird, I am sure many would not have been as loving as you. You did everything you could and this baby died peacefully.

Great advice from others on here for if this happens to any of us in the future
