Cheap cross channel ferry

I'm wanting to travel to France with my car at the beginning of August, which is peak season I know, but are there any tricks for getting ferry crossings cheaper? I know that train tickets, hotels, flights etc can be bought cheaper, but I've been looking on various 'cheap' ferry websites and they are the same price as the ferry company websites - it just seems to be that they are different prices at different times of the day. Can anyone help me please or they just a fixed price?

There are frequent traveler schemes but for the most part its the ferry times and dates that govern the prices, less competition than the airlines.0
