Insurance for written off car

I have an old N reg Punto which was vandalised and written off as 'beyond economic repair'. However, I got to keep the car and I have to get VIC MOT done and I can use it on the road again.
However, I have no idea how I now go about insuring the car. I am currently still with my firm this year but they have put me down to 3rd party only benefits even though I am still paying fully comp premium, until the MOT has been done.
Post MOT, does my car no longer have any value? Should I just insure for 3rd party insurance?
Bit clueless here.

Your insurers may consider the car to be worth a bit less if it still has damage in the event of you having an accident.
Depending on what your car is worth you should weigh up whether it's worth having fully comp insurance or switching to Third Party Fire & Theft or Third Party Only.
I don't see any reason they would refuse to insure the car, although some companies will refuse to offer you fully comp on a previous write off (even if it was only beyond economical repair) it's up to you what level of cover to choose.
I choose to have TPF & T on my car because it's only worth £200 or so and there would be no benefit to me paying the £100 extra for comp when my excess would be more than the value of my car in the event of an accident!Debt 2007 £17k
Current Debt approx £7.5k

At present it is worth its scrap metal value. Once the vehicle has been proven roadworthy again it will be worth what ever a roadworthy car of its make and model in its condition is worth. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Hi there
I think you need to find out which category of write-off your car is. If it is cat D (which it probably isn't) then having it MOTed after the repairs are done will demonstrate it's roadworthiness and, provided you mention the accident to your insurance company, I would think it would be fine. This is exactly what I did with my previous car and I've bought another write-off since then and done the same thing. I've always insured fully comp with no probs and no increase in premiums.
If the car is Cat-C then I wouldn't bother insuring it fully comp as the accident was considered by the insurance company to be moer serious and the car may have been structurally damaged. I was told by my insurance company that the previous history on a cat-C car would mean that you would only get bottom 'book value' if you needed to make a claim. Because of the accident the VIN/condition check will need to be carried out at a Ministry test centre. This is a hassle and will probably devalue your car a bit because the log book will always say vin check and you should disclose the accident if you go to sell it. as the car is older, i'd just go third party.0 -
Hi,
Thought I would add my 2-penneth worth seeing as I work in this sector.
The best thing to do with this vehicle, is determine what category write-off it was. If it was a category C, you would need to have a VIC check completed by VOSA which certifies the vehicle's existence - however, it isn't a certification of quality of repairs or roadworthiness.
Just because your vehicle has had a VIC check should not prove a problem as a friend of mine has an ex-cat C write-off and has it insured fully comp for a decent price considering she is only 22.
Dunno if my ramblings mean much...but HEY!;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0 -
we have bought and done up a cat c write off car and have got it fully comp insured. If you want me to e mail you the vic application form that is in word format, so that you can e mail it to them pm me. I had to get vosa to email it to me because it is not on their website0

if it was written off will you not have to re-register it? what are those Q plates for?,if it`s an N reg you would be better insuring it third party as it is not worth very much I`m afraid.please do not pick on me for my grammar,I left school at fifteen and worked in the building trade for 55years ,

The letter that is given to a car number plate, when the age or identity of the vehicle is unknown, or it may have been rebuilt from parts is 'Q'.0 -

a vehicle that's been a cat c write-off would have to be VIC checked first before a log book is issued also.;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)0
