Replacing OS on new hard drive

I think the hard drive on my wife's netbook has packed in ... If I buy a new hard drive for it, how do I get Windows XP back onto it ? I don't have any operationg discs nor a dvd drive ?

    I'll get you the disc when the time comes. Though you'll either have to get an external optical player/writer for £20 or less or learn how to put the image on to a USB drive.

    Do as suggested, then use the XP repair console to (i) attempt to repair XP, and (ii) check the condition of the hdd to see if it actually needs replacing.
