Newbie needs help with car insurance question

Hi,
Newbie to MSE!, hello everyone.

I have a problem with my old dad's car insurance. He was insured with the AA for a year, ok, no problems,

Then the day after the insurance renews, someone pulls out into him from a side road. He was okay but a bit shaken. Car was a write off, and it wasn't worth claiming against the policy, the scrap value would have been more than the insurance would offer anyway...

He informed his company of the accident and said that he wouldn't be claiming on his policy. They said fine, he let it run for a month or so and as he no longer had a car, cancelled it, to which they acknowledged it and said that the policy was cancelled.

However, he received a letter saying that he owed the full balance of the premium because he had an accident. I don't understand this. How would he need to pay the full outstanding balance of the policy, probably cancellation charge, but the whole amount which is £240. It's crazy, considering it was not even his fault.

He has tried arguing the case but they are flatly refusing and to be honest, I don't know where we stand with insurance companies.

The facts are these:

Accident not his fault 1 day into new policy
Didn't claim on his insurance policy
No longer has the car

Could someone give me an indication of what can be done to argue that. He's a pensioner on a basic state pension and just doesn't have £240 to be throwing around at what seems to be a bully of an insurance company, threatening court, bailiffs and all sorts if he doesn't pay!,

would love to be able to help him and put his mind at rest as he is quite upset by the whole affair.

Many Thanks!

HE needs to ask why they are doing this - it looks like the car he collided with may have made a claim saying he was at fault, and his insurers now have a claim on record that needs to be resolved in terms of who is at fault. In the meantime they are treating it as a claim they may have to pay out on.

(Alternatively, they may have just made an admin error, which is why he needs to get to the bottom of this)

If the other car pulled out in front of him/hit him side on and admitted fault then your dad should be claiming from that drivers insurance policy.

Did the other car driver admit liability. Does he hav their insurance details.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
