Swinton car insurance cancellation fees

Hiya, new girl on here, my first post !
My car insurance renewal is coming up. My current insurance company was very expensive so I shopped around, and found Swinton insurance the best so I phone up and organised the policy paying the first months as a deposit. The policy starts mid July.
I then phoned my current insurance company to cancel the automatic renewal, but they managed to reduce the cost to lower than the quote I got from swinton, so I decided to stick with them.
Phoned swinton to cancel policy and was told there was a £50 fee to cancel the policy, even though it had not even started. Can they do that ?.. Advice would be welcomed. .
Thanks
