Help please. Out of warranty problem with Toyota Verso
Hi. We have a 2008 Verso which we have had from new. The head gasket has just failed and Toyota have said this is a known problem with these cars and they are recommending replacing the short engine entirely. Cost around £4,000.
However, the service history isn't at Toyota. The first service was but we had a problem with the garage that they didn't resolve and we told them we weren't going to go back. And we've used private garages instead.
So Toyota have said it's not covered under their Out of Warranty and that we have to pay. I'm arguing that the car was faulty when we bought it and where we have serviced it doesn't change that. The guy I spoke to sympathised with the situation and said he would speak to the Customer Relations team.
In the meantime, I wondered if anyone has any advice please. Thanks.

If you have receipts to prove that the servicing was carried out correctly using decent quality parts then Toyota might give you some goodwill, all you can do is ask, what mileage are you now at?
Most unusual for a Toyota garage to be sub standard, in your position i'd have gone to another, preferably smaller family owned, dealer to keep the servicing with the maker for at least 4 years...Toyota servicing is cheap enough not to need to go outside.0 -
keep trying with toyota, agree with previous post that you should have tried a different toyota garage, my experince with totoya was very good, even when we had a service plan which purported to be a toyota plan but was actually a garage plan and the garage went bust, toyota sorted out the servicing that i had paid for at another dealer, just a shame that their cars are lacking in character but would always recommend toyota as a private purchase.0

gilbert and sullivan I have used three Toyota garages to service my Auris and was not satisfied with the work any of them did. I now use a small indi. Toyota are also less than helpful!
Ask any Auris owner if Toyota have ever permanently fixed their binding rear brakes!0 -
Toyota seem to have their fair share of "common faults" and the usual policy is to deny them. I found their service is much the same as any other dealer as well. Why do they suggest a short engine, do they admit a common fault with the block?0

Our Verso needed a new clutch and gearbox before its 5th birthday.
Lovely Toyota were apologetic but said nothing they could do to support the work so we had to pay the lot. I was not impressed when I looked through the service history and saw it had had a new clutch just before we got it, 10k miles before.
Good luck with them!Toyota - 'Always a better way', avoid buying Toyota.0 -
Hello. Thanks for the replies and sorry for not keeping the thread updated.
Toyota were happy to cover the repairs in the end so we are getting them done free of charge. I don't know much about cars, but all I know is that it was a known fault and so they are replacing the lot!
Our previous Toyota garage was in Lancashire, but we now live in Hampshire. I can't recommend the one in Basingstoke highly enough. The guy we've been dealing with was great and spoke to Customer Relations on our behalf. He argued that we had 'reasonably maintained' the car as per the out of warranty guidelines. As far as I know, they were happy to authorise the repairs.
So we are happy bunnies. Well done to Toyota for putting their hand up and admitting to a problem and sorting it out without a fight. :T0 -

Excellent. Toyota do have their fair share of common faults, it's well worth pushing them to sort them out.0
