What's the point in an 'honorary' degree?

I don't get it either - and to be honest, if I was a famous actor / footballer or whatever I wouldn't want one either (what is the point ?).
I too find it weird - eg. Alex Ferguson got one, but you never hear of academics being made "honorary footballers" do you ?
Very good point raised there. Nor will most of those who have slogged their guts out working for a degree, ever earn as much as these 'famous people', who get offered them. Though in most cases the fields they go on to work in will be far more important and vital than being an actor / footballer etc.The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
It is just an honour - Like being given the MBE only on a smaller scale!0
