EMA Question

Hi there

My nephew gets EMA ... but he has no control of it in the bank, he actually doesn't know what bank its paid into !!! His mother filled all the forms in and told him just to sign it and she'll explain later but she never did.

She has his bank card/details and won't pass them on, she gives him an allowance, can't remember what he said it was but I think its less than what he gets paid for EMA ... but my nephew is seriously thinking of going to live with his dad so does anyone know how he can trace where this money is being banked? He wants to go and open a new account and transfer the payments to go into there so he can gain control of his money but hasn't got a clue who pays him the money in the first place.

Hope I've explained that properly and hoping someone can point me (and then him) in the right direction.

Thanks

My daughter recieves EMA. She asked me to give them a call once about something as she was at school. I called the council and they would not discuss her account with me. They needed her to call herself as it is her account.

I suggest your nephew calls them to discuss the bank details. He could even change the account without his mum knowing as it is his allowance and his account.

We are in Glasgow and the payment comes from the city council education department. Don't know if it will be same in your area.

We are in the North West area, maybe someone on here will no, but even so I'll still tell him the council then maybe we can start the ball rolling :)

Doesn't EMA end after this term anyway? I thought you now had to claim for it through your school/college?

EMA hasn't existed since the end of the last academic year, it is now known as the BURSARY and is managed by the individual school or college. Your nephew needs to speak to whom ever deals with students finance at his school or college, they will have all the information he needs.

Will he still qualify for this when he goes to live with his dad?

In Scotland you still get EMA.
