Finalising joint Tax Credit with Ex

I split with my husband in Jan notifying tax credits etc. My claim is now just in my single name. I received renewal for my single claim & telephoned to renew etc. What I dont understand is how tax credits finalise the joint claim upto the middle of Jan. They said they would send my ex form etc. I asked how when they dont know his address. They said they trace through Inland Revenue etc so I explained he was not working. Then they said they would trace through the benefit system so I explained he was not claiming benefit. What I would like to understand is any future impact on myself as I have given tax credits all my details etc & cannot do anymore. Do I then become responsible if tax credits cannot finalise our old joint claim. To be honest I always sorted everything out & he really would have a clue. I wish they would just send me the form then I could fill it out ask him to sign & no the damn thing was sorted. What I cannot afford is tax credits turning around and saying I will have to pay money back because the joint claim not closed etc. Any advice appreciated as I just want to get this sorted.

I've just had the exact same thing. they just said to me that they would use the figures i gave on my single claim and transfer to the joint claim. They didn't even mention finding the ex or anything so i too would like to know the answer to this one :)

I am presuming you know where he lives? Could you not pass in his address so it is sorted quicker for you?

Yes that's what I was thinking but may put it in writting & send it recorded delivery. To be honest I know they had all the correct numbers so there should be no overpayment if closed correctly. I may attach a copy of his P45 from the job centre etc and a note to say he had no further income until he started his present job in the new tax year etc. Bascially I am just worried they wont contact him & close claim correctly & that that they will ask me for half of the entire claim back upto Jan. Its great when they say to you on the phone they will only chase you for half but substantial amount of money especially when I know they have all the correct amounts.
