The manufactures are telling you it isn't save to eat, the rest is up to you. I wouldn't eat it myself, many people would, and many people wouldn't.
Lots of foods nowadays have 'use by' dates when in the past the same foods had no dates on at all.
However did we manage in those days...?
Well, we used our common sense - and visual and smell and taste functions.0 -
Of course they are covering their bums to keep us safe. :-)
I also remember keeping milk in a cold pan of water and waiting until it was time to start defrosting the turkey before we bought it from the shop. Then leaving it on the side until it smelled funny because we didn't have a fridge, hell the cat provably snaffled some as well :-)
But I still wouldn't eat anything past its use by date.0 -
Butchers used to hang meat for some time to develop the flavour. In my opinion chicken tastes better past its sell by date, though of course you have to be just as careful to cook it properly as when it was in date.
It’s easy to tell whether meat is off. I still remember one sweltering day coming back from a self catering holiday with a pork chop in the car boot. It wasn’t just slimy by the time we arrived home. It was green.0 -

It's not about 'keeping us safe' at all.
I wouldn't recommend my 87 year old Mum eat a pizza several days past its use-by date but as a fit and healthy 65 year old, it works for me.0 -
30 years ago I worked in a so called high class butchers. Wednesday the boss would go to smithfield at 5am and not return to blighty until midday. he had an unrefrigerated van!!! it stank!!! it was one of my jobs to coat the slimey and golden green chicken breast fillets with the days seasonings of choice!!! this was a weekly task!! I dont recall any complaints either...not deaths strangely enough!!0

All the time. I use my eyes and nose. I’ve eaten yogurt three months out of date and still using soy sauce that is 8 years since it’s been opened. They’re just a couple of examples.0

I was brought up in a home where, if we weren't sure on the sniff test we'd offer it to a cat- if they ate a sample, we'd eat the rest. My partner, though, when we got together and while the children were small was one of those "These crisps were out of date yesterday; throw them else we'll die!" types.
Imagine, if you will, my heart tremor when, after dinner last week, our daughter went to the fridge to get some grapes and proclaimed, "These were best before *four days ago*!"
My heart sank, quite frankly, as I knew he'd demand that they went into the compost, and that he'd grumble at the waste of food and money.
"They're grapes," he said instead. "Use your eyes and see whether they're ok to eat."
He's seen the light! (Meanwhile, I'm still tucking into cream which is three days ood, and I regularly imbibe fortnight-old yogurt with no ill-effects.)They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
Oh hello, I have no problem with yogurts miles out of date at all. They are after all cultures and probably sour anyway!
Cheese, no worries either just cut off the odd bits.
But I am not too worried one way or another. If I feel I can save it, I will, if there is any question, I won't.
Hope all your Brexit stashes are ok. Looks like we might need em.0
