service charge

when I first rented my student house 2 years ago, I had to pay a service charge of £150 and so did each of the other 4 students in the house. What would this be for and is it refundable?

What type of accommodation did you live in? A service charge is a charge for services. Such as communal lighting, cleaning of common parts, grounds maintenance etc.

there has been no services apart from the builders doing the work on a new kitchen extension while we were in the house which was a pain in the bum. not to mention inconvenience.

no garden maintenence, cleaning service, communal lighting or anything. It is a 3 storey terrace house where we rent a room each.

What about lighting on the stairs and in the bathroom/s toilets kitchens etc? This would probably come under the heading of communal lighting.

And did anybody ever clean the stairs and the bathrooms etc. apart from any residents in the house of course?
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
