Long trip to Cyrpus on Statutory Maternity pay - every penny counts!

Hi,
We are moving to Cyprus due to Army posting and i will only be earning SMP (not a lot per month!) so every penny counts while we are living there.
I have two accounts - one with Nationwide and the other with Barclays. Both will charge for withdrawals, transfers to a Cypriut account and purchases.
Does anyone have any suggestions about how i can avoid charges or keep them at a minimum?
I am planning well in advance so i can open new accounts etc if there is a better way of doing this!
