Good quality engineers are opting to work in finance instead?
It's like saying good quality plumbers are opting to become nurses instead and the hospitals are snapping them up.
????
Hardly - I was an Industrial Engineer before I took early retirement and lot of the work I did crossed over into finance. In fact I used to work closely with them on things like headcount planning, labour costs, capital expenditure justification, cost benefit analysis etc. We used to build all of the spreadsheet models for finance.
Just a few of the jobs out there that I could do - there must be a lot of companies looking to reduce cost/improve capacity etc - it's been quite a few years since I've seen as many jobs in my line around as there at the moment tbh. Perhaps there really is a shortage in most disciplines.

And an entry level job.

Lots of engineers end up in finance - you are normally anal enough to be accurate to at least 5 decimal places..... and some companies will pay for you to study for CIMA.0 -
My guess for MrRee is he works in a pulpit or on the stage attempting to convince others that there is light at the end of the dark tunnel. This is despite the fact that these myths have have already been proved by numerous transport agencies throughout the world.

I don't even know what engineering is .... to be honest.0

It is probably the best, purest, form of creative intelligence .... and highly underated.
Without Engineers we would still be living in caves wondering why sparks fly off flint ....... an Engineer came along and put the kindling to the sparks - then went and worked out why a round rock rolled down the hill ...... fast wind to the Motor Car and Central Heating.Bringing Happiness where there is Gloom!0 -
my dad was an engineer and he told me never to be an engineer so good luck to anyone who wants to be but in the words of Duncan bannatyne "Im OUT"Replies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0

engineers do thing like
-design electronic circuitry so you can have things like computers, mobile phones, TVs, WiFi, contactless payment systems, credit/debit cards, cordless phones, ATMs, stereos, CD/DVD systems, printer technolgies
- they design cars with things like ABS etc , adaptive 4 wheel drives, aircon system, airbags etc etc
-they design things like MRI machines, Xray devices, artifical hips
-they design things like aeroplanes, boats, trains, bridges, roads, satellite systems, GPS systems, speed cameras
-they design things like WWW, number plate recognition systems, music downloads systems
-they design wind power systems, solar power devices, power stations, national grid, gas distribution, oil and gas exploration systems, water purifaction systems
basically about 95% of your life has been designed by engineers
but they are generally unloved and not very well paid in the UK:
in Germany however an Engineer is on a par with doctors and are often CEO/Chairman of major companies whereas here we have accountants
PS: I am not an engineer0 -
So, how would somebody become an engineer, worthy of being employed.... starting from absolutely zero?
And how much is "not very well paid"?0 -

one would get 3 or 4 A/Ls including Maths and Physics
go you Uni for 3/4 years ; probably having to specialise after the first year in Machanical, Civil, Electronic or Nuclear
IT tends to be a separate speciality but I consider it engineering too
start on about 23- 25 K (maybe some-one can give an up-to-date figure?)
after that I don't really know as I'm not in that business0
