First stop - your own bank where you hold a current account. They are the most likely to approve you as they have records of your financial standing and management.

Is not a good enough reason! Why exactly do you need a CC?
    1. To make ends meet - bad idea
    2. To pay off other debt(s) - bad idea
    3. For section 75 protection on purchases - good idea
    4. For affordable flexibility when travelling - good idea
    5. Other reason - Pls reveal (if not too private)

Living too tight as you put it, indicates that you are living within your income without incurring debt.

A credit card is debt and it has to be repaid - for people who can't manage their money they are stealing tomorrow's income.

If you feel you are living too tight, the best way to deal with this is to up your income or look at your outgoings and see if they can be cut.

Don't be tempted by a credit card or an overdraft as a means to increase your income - otherwise you are going to find yourself finishing Uni with debts that have to be repaid. This will then possibly stop you doing other things like gap years etc.

Go over to the debt free board for some hints on upping income, there are also other boards on here that will help you cut back on expenses. Are you also making sure you take advantage of everything available to students? DD takes advantage of meal deals, cheap club nights, discount tickets etc and lives the life of riley very cheaply!
