Student Teachers beginning their first post after study - what of tax?

in Cutting tax
Hi all,
I'm a student teacher finishing my postgraduate course next week and have been helping out my coursemates with money saving tips.
When we all started the course, most of us came from industry or other full time jobs and broke off a complete year of work. To that end I armed everyone with P50 forms. Most of us hadn't cleared the (then) Personal Allowance of £7470 and got all our tax back.
I'm conscious that, as we end the course and head into our first posts, we likewise won't have worked a complete tax year and are similarly unlikely to earn too much over the new personal allowance of £8100, yet we will obviously pay several months of full tax.
There are several issues:
1) I'm aware that a P38S form exists exempting students from tax on holiday work.
a) Do we count as students up until our graduation in September or until the date of the final class/lecture later this month?
b) If a is true, will those of us lucky enough to be working for 2-3 weeks before the summer in our new schools as Unqualified Teachers still qualify for use of the P38 form, or would this not be considered holiday work?
c) A few of us are working on a part time basis for our second placement schools teaching booster classes and will be paid later in the summer. What is true is that we were students at the time of work but not on holiday, though we will be on holiday when the pay arrives (but may or may not be students depending on if a is true or not) Can/will a P38 have any bearing on this?
2) Will we need to fill in any paperwork in April/May 2013 to make the claim on the main period of employment or will this be dealt with automatically? (The HMRC website is as clear as mud as usual).
Thanks to anyone who can help!

You'd be better posting this on the Tax Savings Board; this one's about benefits and tax credits.0

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
1. if you have had not earning this tax year and you start work in September you will need to fill in a P46; your employer should give this to you.
you will pay no tax for several months as you benefit from the unused tax allowance for april, may, june, july, august
2. similarly if you start work in june/july and fill in a P46 then you will no tax for the same reason as 1. above
you don't need to make any claims; you just need to fill in a P46 correctly.
if you want to know how the tax system works I will happily try to explain it for you.0 -
P38(s) was for Students that ONLY worked in the holidays but it no longer exists.0

It still exists for this tax year. However it doesn't apply as the OP will be working in the tax year other than just holidays.
As Clapton says, complete the P46 correctly.0 -

CR, what you do when you finish work part way through a tax year is different to what you do when you start work part way through a tax year. In the latter case, it's the P46 which gets you straight: you need to complete one for any job you start where you don't have a P45 issued in the current tax year to hand over.Signature removed for peace of mind0
