Camping by train

Does anyone know of any campsites (that take tents) easily accessible by train?
Travel from Birmingham, so the whole country to choose from

thanks

    Riverside at Betws-y-Coed in Snowdonia - http://www.betws-y-coed.co.uk/accommodation/item/22821/Riverside_Touring_Park_.html

You'll need a train from Birmingham to Llandudno Junction then change for Betws-y-Coed. At Betws-y-Coed station you cross the footbridge, through the railway museum, out of their back gate and you're pretty much there.

Trainwise with a bit of planning ahead and if you split the journey it can be quite cheap if you're flexible regarding when you travel. For example you can get an advance single from Birmingham to Llandudno Junction at 09:09 on Friday for £15 and an advance single back to Birmingham at 20:38 next Monday for £7. Llandudno Junction to Betws-y-Coed is £5.50 return so that totals £27.50 (which is less than half the standard return price).

Can I hyjack this thread to ask you a question? Going to Llandudno soon and would like to go on the train on Snowdon. Can I get from Llandudno to Snowdon by train or by train and then a short bus ride?

You'll need to get to the town of Llanberis and unfortunately there's no railway link from anywhere to Llanberis. There are three options I can think of.

The most scenic route would be to get the train from Llandudno to Betws-y-Coed (which is a direct route so no changes) and then catch the Sherpa bus from Betws-y-Coed to Llanberis. You'll need to plan ahead though as the trains between Llandudno and Betws-y-Coed are a bit infrequent.

The more boring route is to go on the train to Bangor and then get a bus from Bangor to Llanberis. If you go to Bangor by train you'll need to change at Llandudno Junction plus the railway station in Bangor is a bit of a walk from the bus station so not entirely convenient. If you wanted to go this way it might be more convenient to get the bus from Llandudno (either a 5 or X5) as this would take you straight to the bus station and then you could hop straight onto an 85 for Llanberis. This route should be quicker than going via Betws-y-Coed but nowhere near as interesting.

The other option, which I wouldn't really recommend, would be to go on an organised coach trip. There's a local company called Alpine Travel who run various day trips which you can book yourself on at a kiosk just next to the pier entrance. I'm sure they'll have at least one (probably several) trips which visit Llanberis, in fact I'm sure they used to have one that went specifically to Snowdon.

@fat andy, have you ever been lucky enough to have seen Snowdon?
I've been six times and never seen the peak! we normally do a run to Betws Snowdon, Ogden valley. great scenery.
If anyone goes to Betws make sue you have an ice cream at Cadwalladars - really out of this world!

I walked up to the summit, maybe 15-20 years ago, and it was a perfectly clear day. The views from the top are amazing but you do have to be lucky with the weather. The thing that most surprised me about the experience was how many other people were knocking about. We went up the railway path from Llanberis and there wasn't any stage of the walk that there weren't other people in view. At the top there was a queue to reach the summit (and a queue to get to the bar!).
