Don't forget your other thread. What is the spec and model detail of the offending machine?

It's a Dell XPS7100, windows 7 64 bit. I'm sure it's Kaspersky that has caused the issue. Any recommendations for a different free AV??

Thanks for your help, I've installed ubuntu and can access my files!.

Now just need to get a larger external hard drive to copy them across to.

    Thanks for your help.
    That's good!

You could possibly network your machine to transfer the files to the other one, but it needs a bit of technical nouse to get it working.

Alternatively you could get yourself a USB stick to copy them (you can get 16 GB ones for a reasonable price). or even buy an external drive (1TB is under £100) and use it as a backup unit for your important files once you've got everything back up and working. (Remember - a file in only one place is at risk.)

I found that Kaspersky started playing up when it got to the end of its subscription.

I've taken to using Microsoft's security, as it seems to get in the way the least.

(From a security aspect, I also have my day to day account as a standard user and keep a separate administrator account that I use for maintenance; that should help limit the scope of nasty things that come my way.)

Have you un-installed it via Command Prompt?

Haven't tried any of the free offerings.
