Sony DVP-NS15 to Region 0

For my birthday, my daughter has given me a DVD. Despite being clearly advertised as being "Region 0", it's Region 1.

She'll be heartbroken if she finds this out. So, the only solution is to change the region code on the DVD player to 0.

I have a Sony DVP-NS15 DVD player. Fortunately, there is a "hack" for this.

http://www.dvdreviewer.co.uk/Forums/Hack-Help/t606863/Sony-DVPNS15-Hack/page1

It involves using macros on a universal remote control, but I have a One For All URC-8060 Kameleon 6, which can do this. I've programmed the macros into the remote, as per the instructions in the manual.

I've tried "beaming" these into the DVD player, but it doesn't work.

I suspect that I'm doing something slightly wrong somewhere.

Has anyone actually done this, and can give me step-by-step instructions?

    Does this help?

I've tried that, with and without the "00"s.

I also found a promising looking variant, where you input the first code sequence, then switch the player on manually (ie. the button on the player, not using the remote), and then input the second code sequence.

    It still doesn't work. :(

I program the macro codes very carefully. I leave enough time between key presses to allow the code to be transmitted, and for the player to power up. I've even tried unplugging it from the mains, plugging it back in again and then inputting the code sequences.

I also note that, according to my OFA URC-8060 Kameleon 6's manual, the sequence for programming a macro key is different, ie. MAGIC, 995, select macro key then input macro command, MAGIC.

I've tried that one, too. Both switching the player on and opening the disc tray using the buttons on the player and the remote control, just in case it made a difference.

I think we could be getting somewhere. Code 994 is for an exclusive One For All feature called "Key Magic", for directly programming new key function codes. It's not for programming "macro" sequences of standard key presses. I knew I was doing something wrong.

    We've done it! :j

    Easy, once you know how.

For the record and internet search engines ...

How to “hack” the Sony DVP-NS15 DVD player to remove the region 2 code and allow it to play imported DVDs.

You need to use a One For All universal remote control, with their exclusive “Key Magic” feature and at least 5 programmable keys.

I used my One For All Kameleon 6 (URC-8060). These instructions are specific to this. However, other OFA universal remote controls are suitable. Follow the instructions for “Key Magic” in the manual.

Firstly, program the remote control with the DVD player’s device code.

    1. Press the DVD device key.
    2. Press and hold the MAGIC key until the rabbit appears.
    3. Press 0 5 3 3. The IR indicator will blink twice and the rabbit will disappear.

Secondly, program 5 keys on the remote with the following function codes. My Kameleon 6 only has 4 custom keys, so I used the REC key for the fifth key. Other OFA universal remotes have 6 custom keys.

    Code 1 = 1 8 9
    Code 2 = 2 5 5
    Code 3 = 0 9 5
    Code 4 = 2 2 1
    Code 5 = 0 7 9

Some other remote controls may require these codes to be prefixed with 0 0. Try programming the first code without them first.

    1. Press and hold the MAGIC key until the rabbit appears.
    2. Press 9 9 4.
    3. Press the MAGIC key once.
    4. Enter the function code from list above.
    5. Press the key to which the function will be programmed. The IR indicator will blink twice and the rabbit will disappear.
    6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 until all 5 keys are programmed with the function code.

    Finally, re-program the DVD player:

    1. Plug the DVD player into the mains but don’t switch it on.
    2. Press the programmed keys in sequence.
    3. The player should switch on. If not, using the button on the player, switch the player on.
    4. Open the disc tray. If you’ve left a disc in the tray, take it out.
    5. Press the programmed keys in sequence again.
    6. The player should switch off and may restart again. If not, using the button on the player, switch the player off and back on again.

Open the disc tray, put a non-region 2 DVD in, push PLAY and ... enjoy.

    A postscript.

If you wish to use the OFA universal remote control and program "macro" key sequences onto the custom keys you programmed function codes onto to "hack" the DVD player, the "macro" won't overwrite a function code, and there doesn't seem to be a way to erase the function codes individually.

I reset the remote control to the original factory default settings.

The key sequence for this is simply MAGIC, then 9 8 1.
