Do i have a chance at all

Me and the family will be leaving the army in around 10 months time. I really have to start thinking about housing options at the moment.
We don't have anything saved at the moment because we have always felt there would be no chance of getting accepted for a mortgage. I'm in the position now to start putting a bit of money away to help with it all. I was looking into the rent to bu shceme which is less starting out money gives you 5 years to build money an d credit report to then get mortgage. Credit file is not great for either of us at the moment but we are working on it now.
Anybody got any advice.
we have been lucky in the army and housing has been provided but now its time to get to know the ins and outs of the big bad world.
