I have a windws xp computer which is slow but I can browse my documents. I have a number of files on there which I want to take off there and put on my vista. What is the easiest way? I can imagine a usb stick will take ages. I wanted to try dropbox but the internet freezes. Is there another way e.g. by removing the memory and putting it on a newer computer?
Only need the files. Will probably throw the tower away after.

unless you have GB's, usb stick will be fast, or you buy a usb caddy for a few pounds, and put the old hard disk in.
there is a sticky thread above on how to speed up your machine!!

If you're buying a new PC anyway, take the HDD out of the old one, put it in a USB caddy and connect it to the new one.
Copy/paste files and/or folders from old drive to new PC.
If there's only a few files, as was said - copy them to a USB stick or memory card.0 -
There's quite a few files but I won't be buying a new pc. I have a windows vista pc, can I put it in there temporarily? Will throw the old away as I don't think it's good anymore.Pink is so not my colour :undecided0

If it is around 4GB of files, using a DVD to copy them on to would save the removal of the hard drive
Worth running through this afterwards

File and Settings Transfer Wizard, built into XP and Vista. Run on XP, it creates a file you put on a DVD/Memory stick and pop into the Vista computer and restore the settings from it.0

I just dragged everything onto a USB memory stick - this did not take log - and dragged from the USB into my new laptop, which was even faster. I tried moving from my online backup, but this takes ages and uses up my mobile broadband allowance, so decided on the stick/dragging option.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

Don't forget your emails, and contacts if you don't use the document/settings transfer tool.
IIRC the emails can be exported from outlook express fairly easily, but I can't remember if contacts can be done easily (I tended to manually copy the email folder, and address book from it's hiding place).0
