Help with Payment protection from Halifax

Hi all,

I have been meaning to start this process for some time now. Before I start, I would like to run some things past you guys, to help prevent some problems.

I have had a credit card from Halifax since 2003. I think I took it out at the branch, but as it was so long ago, I honestly can not remember. What I do remember is being asked and told that I should take Payment Protection cover out. As I was desperate at the time, I felt I needed to tick the box as this would help with qualifying for the credit card. My partner wasn't impressed!

Halifax have a phone number for their customers to start making a claim. As I am male, I think I would rather call them than fill out the forms. :D

As I don't recall whether I made the agreement out on the phone or at the branch. Would this create any problems for me?

Any tips as what to expect from the representative over the phone?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Potentially yes. You have no recollection of how it was sold. So, you cannot make an allegation of wrong doing at point of sale. Although allegations themselves always make weak complaints anyway. Better to focus on the technical failings, if any.

    Thanks dunstonh,

So, my partner is pretty certain, I took this out at the branch. Is there any way I can confirm this with the bank? Or shall I take the chance and insist that It was?

No. Don't take the chance. Because it goes on balance of probability. If you say it was done at a branch, and then it turns out it wasn't, you lose credibility.

If you don't remember, just say you don't remember.

    Thanks JuicyJesus............Great name!:D

So, if I say I don't remember where I took the agreement out, How can I say I remember feeling I had to take the PPI? Silly question I know, but I have to prepare myself.

Dont worry about verbal allegations. Most verbal allegation complaints do not succeed. Typically you need a technical failing. Set up wrong (i.e. single premium), not eligible for cover, no need for cover or get lucky with an auto payout.

What he's saying is that it is your word against theirs. You have no proof as to anything that was said at an unrecorded meeting. There therefore needs to be another reason for it to be mis-sold, something fundamentally wrong with the agreement.

The problem is, the reasons for it to be fundamentally wrong do not usually apply to credit card PPI - it appears on every statement, and it can't be front-loaded with interest charged like it was on some loans. More to the point, from the sounds of things you took it out willingly. From your original post, you took it out because you thought it would help with a credit application. Unless they told you that it would help when it wouldn't (and it wouldn't), that's not mis-selling, it's mis-purchase. Halifax aren't allowed to tell you lies, but they're not responsible if you believe something that isn't true and act on that belief.

In short, I don't think you have any grounds for complaint.
