Reasonably priced hotel in Barcelona needed

Hi,
I wonder if anyone could help me please.
I have booked a cruise from Barcelona in August with the flights seperate. So I am looking for a reasonably priced hotel for a couple of days either side. Not sure if it would be best for us to be nearer to the airport or the port? Don't know which is the easiest / cheapest to get to?
It would be for 3 nights - Thurs 2nd / Fri 3rd and Sat 11th Aug.
It is for me and my 2 young daughters (aged 9 & 7) so would need to be in a safer area.
Would anyone have any suggestions / tips for me please? Also any family friendly must do things for when we're there?
Thank-you so much

Last year we stayed at hotel Cristal Palace which is on a quiet street north of Las Ramblas in an upmarket area. Metro station is just round the corner. We found it on Lastminute.com at a decent rate.0

We visted Barcelona a couple of years ago, and stayed at the Acta Antibes hotel. It cost us about £170 for three nights which for Barcelona was really reasonable. I think its only rated 2 star but it was a really nice hotel, and in a fantastic location (think it was about a 5 min walk from Sagrada Familia). I would highly recommend it.0

You won't want to stay at the airport, there's nothing there. I'm not entirely sure where cruise ships would dock but the harbour in Barcelona is easily accessible from the rest of the city so it doesn't really matter where you stay. I'd suggest you start by searching this board for previous threads about Barcelona, there are lots of them and it may prevent people having to repeat information they've already given.0

Stayed in a few places there on a budget over the years, one of the better ones was the Hotel Gran Ducat, its well located/easy to find, just at the top of Las Ramblas and off to the right.
Its not a smart as it looks on its website but it was clean and comftable enough for the price. alos do sugest cross checking prices on places like cheaprooms.com with online reviews.
some reviews of it here http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g187497-d314854-Reviews-Gran_Ducat_Hotel-Barcelona_Catalonia.html
