Help needed with decent and reasonably priced areas in Sussex

Right, we've finally been priced out of the big smoke with three beds in Crystal Palace shooting well over £250,000! Gutted cause we love the area but there you go.
We're thinking heading for Sussex as it looks like we may be able to just scrape a three bed terrace for our budget of about 230,000 but not sure where.
Just wondering if anyone could suggest some half decent areas that are affordable. We'd love somewhere vagely rural or least alot more relaxed than London. On the other hand, my wife is a nurse and so we'd need to be within travelling distance of one the biggish hospitals.
We've looked at (although not actually visited) everywhere from Horsham and Lewes which look very pleasant right down to the Brighton suburbs which look affordable. Are there any real gems in Sussex that we should know about?
Also wondering whether the prices/demand are still going through the roof like they are in london. We'll be actually heading down to have a look around next week so any suggestions would be grateful!

The eastern side of the county tends to have lower house prices, but you'd be commuting on the Hastings line into Charing Cross or Cannon St, rather than the Brighton line into Victoria. You would need to be south of Wadhurst, which is pricey due to its proximity to Tunbridge Wells. There are no "branch" lines either, so unless you opt to live near to a station, you'd be looking driving to the railway station.
Once you get to Battle, the commute is about 1hr 15 mins central London and costs about £30 return (less, if you opt for a season ticket).
Freeman Foreman is a local estate agent and they have a handy map of the area I'm referring to on their front page.
Although under offer, here's a 4 bed Victorian semi in Robertsbridge for under £250,000. Or this Grade II cottage in Sedlescombe, which is about a 15 min drive to Battle.
Other agents in that area
Douglas Moloney
Rush Witt & Wilson
Chris Campbell
Batchellor Thacker
Peter Buswell
And there's the Conquest Hospital in Hastings/St Leonards with another at Eastbourne.

Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...0 -
Thanks guys, probably didn't make it clear that my wife needs to be near a hospital actually in Sussex as she'd be looking to avoid the commute to london. I should be able to work from home.
I can see that the east of the county is cheaper and whilst this is tempting we'd also like to be close to my wifes parents who live farnborough, Hampshire which would really mean the west somewhere (I know, so many requirements!).
Cheers for your feedback anyway.0 -
I'm no expert on house prices in the area, but I do know what it's like to live here. I live in Horsham and can confirm it is a lovely place! There is a hospital there but I'm not sure how big it is. I think there's a relatively big one in Crawley, which is only a few miles down the road. It's well connected by road and rail.
I grew up in Bognor Regis, right down by the seaside. It often turns up as the butt of many jokes, but it's not all that bad. The surrounding area is really lovely. There's a big hospital in Chichester (I was born there
)
By the way, Brighton is fab!

It seems no-one has a bad word to say about Horsham and it looks like it'll be our first stop of places to visit next week. Doesn't seem to be much in the way of three beds to buy at the mo however. Saw a nice property in a place called Littlehaven. Sisterseph, how far is this from Horsham and are there any ameneties there?0
