I am sure there was something in one of th mse newsletter emails a couple of weeks ago about getting cheap rails fares, think it was about splitting the journey or something, I have had a look but cant find the post.
Does anyone have a link to it?

I'm not sure if there's a thread, but it's right that splitting your train journey often works out cheaper, I've seen many people do it. The best way to do this is to find the station between your home and final destination than minimises the overall cost (use an online journey planner for this), then plan your journey accordingly. I guess you could try splitting your journey more than once, though I haven't tried this.

Another way of saving money is to go via another route. And this doesn't require you to buy advance tickets. The only problem with this is things get a bit messy in terms of connecting trains, coming back etc.

Unfortunately in recent times I think train companies may have noticed that customers are splitting their journeys, and thus they increased the price of shorter journeys also. I find it hard to save a significant amount by trying to split a journey these days.
