Charged late fee after DD failed

in Credit cards
I recently took out another credit card to take advantage of an interest free period. When I received the card I set up a direct debit, on the credit cards website, to pay the minimum amount each month. I have just received my second statement and I have been charged £25 late fee for non-payment. I then checked my bank account online and the DD has not been set up. I didn't receive confirmation that the direct debit had been set up, and the lender is saying that because of that it is tough and I will not be refunded. Is that correct or is there any chance of getting a refund if it was their fault it wasn't set up?

I would cal again, get names and ask to speak with a manager. 'd also check that your 0% deal is still valid because if you breach the terms of the contract, which can include late payment, they often take away any privilage deals.
Hope it works out..0 -

Probably if you explain that the error is on their end they will reinstante your 0% and reimburse you the charge.
Personally, I take a hands on approach, i.e. do all payments manually via online BACS or by debit cards0 -
with it being your first payment on the card, the companies do understand that mistakes can be made by you/your bank and that dds dont go through sometimes. They should be willing to waive the fees for a first offence.Compo challange:Amount won £0 Need to win £2400

I managed to get the late fee refunded and the 0% deal put back on. I set up a D/D there and then and paid off the outstanding money. This was with MBNA they were quite nice about it really. It is my first card with them and I did mention potentially cancelling the card.Nothing's free.....but we'll see what we can do!0

I used to do this too but I realised we are at the mercy of the postman and not being away from home for more than about 10 days to ensure payments are made on time. The direct debit method is safer but you do need to make sure the DD is set up correctly and in time.0 -
Always make the first payment manually, irrespective of whether you have set up the DD or not - after all, you are only making the minimum payment, so if at all, you make a small overpayment the first time round. By doing so, you can avoid time wasted in such phone calls, follow ups, etc. It's always the grass that suffers, irrespective of whether the elephants are fighting or making love !!!0
