Tax credits - deducting SMP?

  • I was in a similar situation. My SMP was split across 2 tax years and for the life of me, I couldn't figure out why the tax year with the bigger SMP payment was for fewer weeks. Baby brain then kicked in and I remembered I had contractual pay as well. As mine was split, I had 15 weeks in one year and 24 in the 2nd so £1500 SMP in 2010/11 and £2400 in 2011/12.

Yes I was on maternity leave for 39 weeks but the first 8 weeks of it were in the previous tax year so I don’t think I take those into account do I? Thanks for all the advice :)

Ah i see, I missed that part of your OP. Then yes, that is right, £3100 deducted.

Did you deduct the other £800 from your previous year income?

No, I don’t think I did to be honest – I hadn’t long given birth and wasn’t really on planet earth to be quite honest! So maybe I should mention it, even though I’m guessing it’s too late now – at least if I tell them though then I can rest assured that they now they know! Thanks.
  • I only applied for tax credits in the last tax year so I was asked for proof of income & benefits for 2010/11 as well as 2011/12 so I had to declare SMP for both tax years.
