Hi all, we've built a new Downshift Challenge Tool that estimates how much you could save by downshifting supermarket brands. It uses Mysupermarket data to estimate savings.

Please note the tool is still a work in progress, so some of the images for the different supermarket brands are still being added.

It would be fantastic if you could ...

a) let us know what you think and
b) report any bugs

  • Very good, I am an avid Lidl fan so not madly applicable to my shopping but certainly interesting.

That's really a good way at looking at saving and the tool is easy to use. I've never really worked out how much I would save if I switched to own brand so was shocked to realise I could save £1,400 a year! That could get me a family holiday! Time for a change I think :o
Big thanks to all who contribute to the forums. Be lucky everyone and be safe!
  • That's interesting but I think I'm a pretty savvy shopper anyway.

I only buy premium on a very select few items, branded on preferred items or offers but mostly own brand goods. There's only some value brands I trust as being tasty or good quality.

I'll certainly give it thought when I'm shopping in future though.

My boyfriend does his weekly shop at an M&S service station!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in the process of educating him but it's a bit of a long slog

I think thats a very good tool for people who are new to the site and will be good to point them towards it as a real example of how much can be saved.

Not sure how this will work really. I choose what I buy on various factors not always price, for example predominately we use Sainsburys and do buy their economy brand if it represents good value and we like the product, some economy items I actually prefer to the higher cost items in other cases I just don't like them and they get wasted.

For example the only Cornflakes we like are Kellogs, we have tried others but don't like them. In the case of biscuits I prefer Sainsburys economy ones for example Rich tea at 14pence are just as good as Mcvities (IMHO).

Basically I always look for the best value but do not buy just because it's cheap.
  • very useful will be checking my food shopping prices more i tend to buy alot of value price stuff now and i shop around alot.

The tool doesn't have Waitrose and Lidl on it so I had to use ASDA whereas in reality my weekly shop is 50% Lidl, 15% Waitrose 10% ASDA, 5% Morrisons, 10% Sainsburys, 5% Poundland, 5% 99p Stores.
    Different stores for different reasons.
