HDMI problem on computer

I have a Radeon HD6670 graphics card and a Samsung SyncMaster 2494HM monitor connected using a DVI lead at a recommended resolution of 1920 by 1080.
There are HDMI sockets on the monitor and graphics card so I connected them using an HDMI lead and the picture is terrible and slightly fuzzy.
It is still at the resolution of 1920 by 1080 but there is a border of about 1 cm round the picture and I cannot change the resolution or find any setting to improve the picture.
The change settings are greyed out.
Are the graphics card and monitor incompatible or are the sockets just so that I can connect the computer to a HD TV and use the monitor from an HD source such as a Sky+ HD box?

Go to CCC>>>My Digital Flat Panel>>>Scaling Options, make sure it's Overscan 0%
CCC= Catalyst Control Centre.
Also make sure your GPU drivers are up to date.0 -

Does not help, picture is still fuzzy compared to DVI input.0 -
Are you SURE that HDMI is outputting 1920x1080? Does the MONITOR perhaps have an overscan feature (usually only TVs)? My Samsung TV calls turning overscan off 'Just Scan' and is accessible through the aspect ratio settings (4:3, 16:9, zoom etc).0
