What does Shabby Chic mean to you?

Options
Before you google the term let us know what Shabby Chic means to you...

eBay seems to be full of it at the moment as well as, amusingly, Shappy Chic, Shabby Chick, Shabbly Chic, Shabbily Chik etc etc...

Lots of listings are just calling their item Shabby...

Your thoughts please.

Take a perfectly good item, rough it up a bit, and voila

Some of us do like that aesthetic, but it is strictly speaking a trademark and is rigorously policed on eBay for that reason.

I doubt very much that Shabby Chic bandwagon jumpers are aware of that LOL ... Does Shabby Chic Style pass the test?

It would depend on whether it's furniture or furnishings.
I like shabby chic, when done well. To me it's an eclectic mix of stuff, painted furniture, wicker, print fabrics.
I know that it was trademarked some years ago & ebay don't stand a chance of policing all the listings that use the term.
A lot of the stuff on ebay, is definitely far more shabby than chic.

Well you learn something everyday! I had no idea it was a trade mark. With that in mind I had a search and came across this very interesting blog / article from someone who got in trouble...

If I was Rachel Ashwell, I would allow people to use the term & charge them for doing so, £1 a time. If it could be policed.
94,338 listings at the moment on ebay uk using the term shabby chic in their listings.
She wouldn't have to do anything else & would by now have been able to retire on her very own Shabby Chic island in shabby chic comfort.
