Tipping hotel maids in Greece?

I'll be going on a trip to Rhodes soon, I have heard conflicting opinions on whether it is customary to tip hotel maids. Does anyone have any experience of this, and how much per day?

The last tip I gave fell at the second.
Don't tip people for just doing their job. If your kiddie throws up all over an expensive rug and they get down and clear it up before you get the chance to do so they deserve something but for just doing their job NO.
I don't tip shop assistants, flight attendants, traffic wardens, Big Issue sellers for doing their jobs so why would I tip anyone for just doing what they are already paid for.
Anyway you could cut out the middle (wo)man and give the money straight to Germany.0 -
I do tip some people for a personal service but never room cleaners. Maybe it's because I never see them so there's no personal contact but it's not as if I'd expect them to do a better job based on a tip.0

i always tip room cleaners unless im only staying one night
i look back to when my girlfriend worked in a bar to help us pay the rent and it was only the tips that kept us solvent0 -
Im lost for words over the tightness of somepeople, like spain there is no formal tipping etiquette, but most would still round up to the nearest euro, wages are really low in Greece so it would be a nice gesture to tip the room maid a couple of euro's, these replys amaze me that it's right to tip someone that carry's your dinner from the kitchen but forget about the poor !!!!!! thats got to clean up after you because you don't see them.
The room maid is providing a service if you are happy with that service then show your appreaciation
when we go away we tend to tip at the begining, middle and end of our stay as it wont always be the same person that cleans your room0 -
I tend to leave something like €10 at the end of my stay0

Do you tip Policeman as they drive past, they are providing a service, your local librarian or perhaps every road sweeper you pass, my guess would be no so why do people see the need to tip all and sundry when away from home?0 -

Tip = Thanks in payment (or variants of)
You = Mug (or variants of)0 -
I tip when I leave, Normally I leave all my loose change and maybe a small note depending how much money I have for food on way home etc.
In UK I tip a few £'s having worked in hotels cleaning up other peoples mess, (when I was younger) it makes a small difference and puts a smile on your face.Aspiring to be financially independent.... from my parents!0 -

There a million miles between the wage of a public service provider, in fact i've yet to have the need of a policeman or librarian (it's all automated) yet i still pay for them,
The starting wage of a policeman is almost 23k, the room maid will be lucky if they make 5k and there's no such thing as tax credits in greece. we all be moaning that we got it hard here it's nothing compared to the cuts the greeks have had
I don't tip all and sundry when im away from home as I also tip for good service here if someone does me a personal service that makes my life easier i appreciate it0
