Paying off and Closing Account

I have taken out a loan to re-pay all four of our credit cards.

After calling Virgin, and being told by the answerphone that I have to login to Virginmoney.com to make a payment. I would like to ask what would be the best way to pay off the credit cards and get the account closed.

I think I have two choices. 1.) Pay money on online services and write a letter to ask to close the account, or 2.) call up an expensive call-centre and ask to close the account and pay off the debt.

What advice would you give as to the methood I should use? Would they want it in writing to close the account regardless?

remember that even if you pay the full amount this month there may be some residual interest next month so you probably won't be able to actually close it until next month
