Painting furniture help

I have a light pine wardrobe that i want to paint white. It has a light glaze? on it but iam not sure if i need to completely sand this off with an orbital sander to get right down to the bare wood before i prime it. Is this necessary? My dad said that you can just lightly "key" it by hand using sandpaper just to ensure the paint sticks. please help!
Thanks in advance

I've had good success by lightly sanding to key the surface as your Dad suggests. A couple of coats of primer/undercoat then the final finish. they look good in a matt 'eggshell' finish IMO, but not as hard wearing as gloss.0

and then a couple of coats of water based satinwood and the job's a good un0 -
I can definitely recomend Zinsser, I have just painted 3 pieces of furniture which were either waxed or laquered, I sanded any really bad areas, follwed by one coat of Zinsser and 2-3 coast of Dulux Satinwood and they look fantastic. I did leave the units to dry for 10 days before using them as the paint felt abit rubbery for a while.0

Thanks so much for all the replies, you've been a great help. Where can I buy the Zinsser primer?0

try your local building suppliers or have a look here http://www.zinsseruk.com/supporttool/suppliers.aspx0 -
I asked a similar question, and was recommended to Annie Sloan paints. Quite chalky (gesso) and no need to rub down0
