Travelling to Belgium -Time left on passport??

Just wanted to see if anyone had any experience of travelling to Belgium with only a few days left on passport?
OH passport runs out on 6th September 2012, and he wants to go to Belgium from 1st-4th September 2012.
On fco.gov.uk it says if you are travelling for less than 3 months to Belgium then you do not need any longer than your stay on the passport.
I'm just worried about delays, or on the way back them saying he needs 6 months and he can't get back!
The obvious answer is to get a new passport but I'm 2 weeks away from having our first baby and we could do without the extra cost. Mine has run out and we were just going to let his run out too and renew them when the baby is bigger and we go on our first family holiday!

If he can't get back they'll deport him.0 -
You definitely don't need 6 months left, even for USA, despite what some travel agents may tell you. Volcanoes excepted, a delay of over a day from the EU is exceptionally unlikely. And in any case I can't see a British airline denying boarding to someone with a return ticket and a passport valid on the intended date of travel.0

Id be more worried about being stuck in Belgium for a day longer than I needed to be. Not the validity of my passport.
If he is lucky he will miss his outbound flight.0 -

No problem at all: even a recently-expired passport would be enough to get back.0

Thanks so much for your replies, think he will go ahead with the trip!
Haha, Mr Wang I'd be inclined to agree with you but he's going for the Grand Prix, all expenses paid by my brother as a gift so didn't want to let him down!Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference
