New Family Car... advice?

Hi all,
I'm hoping someone may be able to offer me some advice about getting a new car as I have no idea on these things.

Currently have a 2006 Ford KA with 44k miles. I really love it and it runs like a gem but my husbend and I are now expecting a baby and I've been reading about how the KA is a little difficult to get prams and baby paraphernalia in it.

I've been quoted about £2400 to sell it.

I want to get a larger car (but still hatch back) and am looking to spend around £1400 (and then use the remainding money towards my maternity leave). Am aware that the car will be older than my KA with more miles on clock.

My question is... which cars can people recommend for family life that are good runners as they approach more miles (80k+) if there is such a thing?

I bought a 2004 mondeo for less than £2400. That was 2 1/2 years ago.

Depends how many miles you do and your journey types.

Short journeys and lots of city driving do not suit modern diesels.

1.6 petrol focus? As reliable as they get.

Thanks, focus was one of my first choices so will look into them.

I mainly do short city drives and a long 60 mile round trip drive every month or so to visit family.

Ford Focus or Mondeo, avoid the diesels they can be troublesome (work at garage).

Skoda Octavia estate will swallow all the baby stuff, which we got when bumble wast 1 managing with a Ford Puma untill then, boot can't be much bigger than a KA. You are also a little optimistic on what yours is worth.

you wont get 24 for it unless its well specced and mint mint
be careful with the change over
do your sums first or you might end up with a money pit thats hard on fuel tax and insurance plus expensive parts
i wont rrecommend a car because i wouldnt know where to start but would be thinking petrol fiesta/punto

Wife and I survived 4 months with a toyota IQ getting wife, baby, pushchair and stuff in and out. See how you go first. Can you switch air bag off in the KA?

get an estate car, you won't believe the amount of stuff you will need to lug around with you

That is the quote that I have been given on it by a dealer so far
