Amex - denied a balance transfer - help!

Hi - first post, love the site. I have a specific query - thanks in advance for any help.

Basically, I've had an Amex card with a big credit limit for about three years. It's currently 0 balance, and I'd like to transfer my other credit card debts onto it. However, when I try to do it online I'm told to phone them, and when I get through to their call centre in India, I'm told there are no balance transfer offers available on my account.

Does anyone have any idea how I could convince them to let me make a transfer? Surely it's in their interests? I've been trying every other month for six months, and am always told there are 'no offers on your account'.

Any ideas very very much appreciated....

BT at promotional rate or not at all?

I believe Amex are no longer allowing BTs as a general rule
We may offer you the opportunity to request Balance Transfer(s) from time to time - we will charge interest on all balances that result from Balance Transfer(s) at the standard rate of 1.24% per month, 15.9% per annum on a daily basis until the amount is fully repaid to us.
  • Thanks for the reply Tom. No, they're not allowing me to make any balance transfer at all.

Really irritating - is this a new policy on balance transfers?

Before Christmas I was accepted for a Platinum Amex card as I wanted to do BTs but when I phoned up to activate the card and to make a BT I was told Amex didn't allow BT anymore.

When I questioned the reason why I was told that it was because they were a responsible lender and didn't want people to increase their debt levels. I tried showing how illogical that thinking was but they were having none of it!

So one minute I was activating my card and the next I was cancelling it.

  • If you want an Amex card and the ability to do balance transfers, why not go for the MBNA Amex card (http://www.mbna.co.uk/creditcards/mbna_amex.html) ? BY the looks of the things they have the following offers:

0% p.a. on card purchases for three months from account opening(0.0000% monthly), 0% p.a. on balance transfers and credit card cheques for twelve months from account opening (0.0000% monthly) provided you operate your account within the terms and conditions.
