Will a strongish water / bleach solution not just bring it off (with a grout brush)?
If you are careful a blade from a stanley knife might also do the job.
O and finally is it caulk/sealer or is it grout the frame is covered in?
It seems odd he'd have grouted it when it was removed?0 -

I think it was grouted on to the wall!!!!

So he put it back up before he grouted? Nit! Take it off again - soak it in hot water - it should come off if the surface is nice and shiny. Whilst its down grout the joints that were missed before putting it back again..
Otherwise take it off and take it down to the merchants for a matching exercise..The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has it's limits. - Einstein0 -

No, knew I was no good at explaining, it was grouted to the wall, but because he is retiling he has taken it off and it is covered in grouty stuff which I would like to get off before he puts it back up
:D, does that make sense!!!

Oh I see - sorry. Old grout may still come off but I'll not guarantee it. If its a chriome finish don'tt even tghink about scraping it - you'll just scratch the surface.
Plan B - Take it down to the merchants and get the closest fit for size that you can.
