If you make manual payment more than 4 working days before the due date, and the payment is equal to or more than the direct debit amount, then no direct debit will be taken.

Basically if you're making a manual payment a week before the direct debit then you need to send the additional payment plus the direct debit amount.

I thought this was common with all card accounts.

I have an MBNA card and it clearly states that any manual payments made will not affect the direct debit. So if the minimum payment is £25 and you make a payment of £25, a DD will still be taken for £25. If the DD causes you to go into credit, they might refund it (depending on the amount over) or you can request it back.
  • Capital one have messed up my direct debits for the past two months, charging me a total of £36 !

Firstly I changed my DD amount from £100 to the minimum payment. With 3 weeks to process my request, they failed to arrange it and didn't take any payment.

Charged £12. Got it refunded.

Then I phone up to activate a new card and they tell me my account is overdue (current card still active) and my bank has cancelled my DD. Phone the bank they say Capital one cancelled my DD

Charged £12, takes me over limit, charged another £12. After much arguing I got it refunded.

Left with two missed payments on my credit file and I won't be using DDs anymore !

I pay my T*sco card in full every month manually (on line) as soon as I get statement - however minimum DD was also being taken (£10) until I queried it............person I spoke to didnt really have an answer as to why so I cancelled DD

Becuase Tesco always takes the minimum payment regardless of other payments.
