Myself and my fiance are looking to travel america for about 3 weeks for our honeymoon. Ideally, we're looking to travel by train as we'll be able to take in the views. Are there any recommendations for how to go about this - are there UK travel agents which can help us? We've seen a few tours but not sure if we'll be able to do it cheaper ourselves and get to all the places we want - San Diego, LA, San Fransico, Salt Lake City, Grand Canyon, Chicago, Denver, Washington DC, Boston & NY.
Any help would be gratefully recieved!! :)

In 3 weeks.. need to cut down on a few "must see" lol..we are doing 6 weeks and only doing 1 state lol.

I agree, you could easily spend more than 3 weeks just doing San Diego, LA and San Fran.

3 weeks = 21 days. That means if you spend 1 day in each of your 10 destinations and 9 of the days travelling from city to city (about 4500 miles in total) you'll have 2 days to spare!

I consider myself a fairly high-octane traveller (did NYC/DC earlier this year in 5 days and in the past have done 4 states in 2 weeks) and even I think you should cut down on the number of places.

Check Amtrak's list of routes as this is probably the cheapest way round the greatest number of destinations:

Like everyone else has said youre trying to fit in way too much.

Pick one coast and leave it at that. Do the other another time!

Flights with internal airlines like SouthWest can be cheap, I wouldnt waste even more time on trains going through fields.

If you want to see the sights, get to the places you want to visit asap!

And I wouldnt bother with tours, you can organise your trip yourself and not pay a fee for it.

For most of America I'd agree. It's a big place and a lot of it is empty so it's usually better to fly than go by train - but the Eastern Seaboard is an exception. The places are relatively close together, there is lots to see and the train service (Acela Express) is excellent by American standards - though calling it a "High Speed" line is stretching the definition of HS rail a little. The TGV or Bullet Train it isn't.

You can do downtown to downtown DC <-> NYC <-> Boston in about 3 hours each which is way quicker than you could do by flying.

I hope that one state is not Rhode Island or Delaware. You could do either of those in an afternoon.
