Car insurance & no claims

Hello,

I have recently bought a new car and have bought my car insurance through Sheila's wheels. My old car's insurance with admiral runs out at the end of this month and I need to provide Sheila's wheels with my proof of no claims. However, as my car insurance with admiral is still active, they won't send it until the end of the month when it expires. I have phoned Sheila's wheels and they have agreed to extend the date I have to send it til the 4th July and have said that if I ring them once it has expired, then they will phone admiral for me and confirm my proof of no claims. Has anyone ever done this before and can confirm that this is right?!! Just a bit worried they will cancel my insurance without me knowing!!

I am also trying to sell my old car at the moment and have had some interest. I am now concerned that if I sell it before my car insurance runs out at the end of the month, I will have to cancel the insurance with admiral (and pay for that privilege!!!!!) and I will lose my 7th year of no claims as I would have cancelled it before the full term of the insurance. Is this correct??!! If so, are there any ways round it? And do you think it's reasonable to ask the new buyer to wait a couple of weeks before taking it??

Thanks in advance!

You need to make sure that SW know you currently have no NCD for the policy you bought, and thus the proof you will eventually send them will show a different date to the one they are expecting. (Otherwise expect a problem when they eventually do get your proof!)

(This extension they have given you looks to enable you comply with their request to prove your NCD available at the start of the policy!)

If you cancel your current policy before the year end, then you won't get any NCD for the current year. If it is important, all you can do is await the year end and hope there are no complications over any buyer not insuring your car.

As above you currenty dont have any no claims bonus to use for your new car its still in use on the old one.

SW may increase the premium to take this into account. they may think its just taking you time to send the proof. When they find out the no claims is niot currently valid the premium may increase considerably.

Cancelling your old policy maybe expensive also.

I had explained the situation to SW over the telephone and he didn't mention anything about the NCB not being valid - he seemed as though he'd heard this situation many times before and simply offered me extra time. I have emailed SW to confirm what he has said is correct but am awaiting their reply. I didn't realise that it would make it not valid - as I will have (by the end of this month) the proof of NCB.

In an ideal situation I will hopefully sell my old car before the end of the month and hope that the new buyer will be happy to wait to take it on the 1st of July. Wish this could be simpler!!!!!!!!

In worst case scenario - I will have to cancel my insurance with Admiral on my old car and then phone SW and tell them I only have 6 years no claims (which would be very frustrating as its literally a matter of a couple of weeks until I have my 7 years NCB) and I'm assuming they will charge me for changing my policy and for having 1 less year of NCB

It is valid, but you can only use it against one policy. You are currently using it on two!

OP is not cancelling the insurance, they are just not renewing it, the OP says it runs out at the end of the month.
So there should be no cancellation issues.

Probably only if SW wouldn't insure you if they thought you had no NCD to use for this new policy.

They may want some extra premium, as theyhave allowed you discount you are not entitled to.

Just clarify the issue with them now, so that there can be no problems should a claim turn up!

I had explained the situation (before I knew about not being able to cover NBC on two cars) this morning to SW and the man on the telephone didn't mention anything about the fact that I shouldn't have it on two cars - do you think they have a 'switchover' period for times like this then? As I won't actually be driving my old car - it is up for sale - and it will only be a couple of weeks. Seems like a massive hassle to cancel my old insurance, declare my car as SORN (i will obviously have to declare it as SORN if it doesnt sell in time!) and only have 6 years NCB rather than 7 for the sake of a couple of weeks - and also have to pay SW to amend my policy.
As he is offering me extended time to send my NCB to them, do you think they are ok with this sort of situation?

    It would be most unusual!!

As previously posted, the extension given will be to get your proof to them - it's doubtful the "man on the phone" appreciated you actually had NIL NCD to transfer!

Just make sure they are aware the NCD proof can't be provided because it's being used on another policy, and is that OK with them?

Then if they say "no", you can sort it out before you end up in a situation where you have a void policy on your hands (which could cause you big problems fir evermore!)

If they do say "don't worry", then ask them to confirm that in writing!

Thanks for your help - I have emailed them (they should reply within 3 days) and explained that I had already spoken to somebody on the telephone today and then re-explained the situation and asked them to confirm if thats ok. If not, then they can tell me what to do from there but at least they can see I've been honest (and confused!!!) and then it will be in writing as well. Also, I think its easier to make your point clear in writing, rather than trying to explain over the telephone! Just hope they reply quicker than the 3 days so I can stop worrying and get it sorted!!
